Apple's 9 September event could deliver its first foldable iPhone

Apple will stream a special event at about 19:00 SAST on Wednesday, 9 September. The invite uses the line "Surprise and shine". Apple's event page promises the latest iPhone lineup. It has not named a foldable, a price, a storage cut or a market list.

Reuters has reported that Apple is expected to introduce its newest iPhone series and could unveil a first foldable. That remains reporting, not an Apple confirmation. Ming-Chi Kuo has also been cited saying a foldable may not ship with the first iPhone 18 wave.

What is fixed, what is not

A book-style foldable would add a phone-sized outer display and a small tablet inside. Samsung, Honor, Huawei and Google already sell that format. The known trade-offs are price, thickness, crease, repair cost and durability. Apple entering the category would not cancel those. It would change how seriously accessory makers, app developers and networks treat the format.

The software is the open engineering question. iOS has to keep state when the device opens and close, and do more with the inner screen than stretch a phone layout.

South Africa

Apple has no retail stores here. Phones arrive through authorised distribution, iStore and the Vodacom, MTN and Telkom networks. Dates and configurations often lag the first-wave markets. A constrained first foldable, if it exists, may skip or delay South Africa. Converted dollar rumours are not local prices. VAT, distribution and regional pricing decide the tag.
